The Three Graces in the Lednice-Valtice Cultural Landscape

These naked goddesses watch over the pond. In winter, preservationists cloak them in robes.

The statues of the Three Graces – Athena (goddess of wisdom and justice), Aphrodite (goddess of love and beauty) and Artemis (goddess of the hunt) – attract tourists walking on the paved road branching off from the main travel route between Lednice and Valtice.
This sculptural group was made out of a single piece of stone by Leopold Fischer and it was originally part of the chateau park in Lednice. However, the curves of the goddesses’ bodies allegedly kept the noblemen awake at night, so it was decided that a temple would be built for them.  An Empire-style pavilion formed by a semicircular roofed colonnade, consisting of 12 Ionic columns, was erected in 1824–1825 under the direction of Johann Carl Engel. In the recesses of the colonnade there are copies of ancient allegorical statues representing the various arts and sciences. The temple is designed to balance the Pond Chateau on the opposite side of the pond. The roofed colonnade is listed as a cultural monument.
