Czech Specials at Castles and Châteaux

One of the oldest castles in Bohemia, the Vildštejn Castle in Skalná u Chebu, 6 kilometres from the Františkovy Lázně spa in west Bohemia is definitely worth a visit. There you will find the medieval Hodovna. Its motto is: “A stylish setting, Czech cuisine, honest production and local suppliers.” They will treat you with old Bohemian specialities and excellent home-made smoked meats from the castle butcher. You can also join the stylish knight feasts.



You can also expect a combination of a cultural and gastronomic adventure at the château inn, U Rudolfovy kratochvíle, at the Zbiroh Château, near Plzeň. After touring the château, where you can see the oldest free-standing watchtower in the country in the original castle area, the deepest well in Europe and one of the oldest castle chapels in the country, you can enjoy the tuned interior of the château restaurant that will take you back in time. The menu, however, also includes modern Czech cuisine, such as duck leg confit with imperial speck dumpling and sauerkraut, or the castle roasted pork knee served with a small loaf of bread. Naturally, a properly cooled beer is a must. The Zbiroh Château Hotel is also the only hotel where you can spend a night in one of the rooms where such great personalities as emperors Rudolph IICharles IV and Sigismund, or Alfons Mucha and Ema Destinová used to stay.



Near Mělník, you can have lunch in the beautiful château restaurant in the Baroque Liblice Château from the 17th century. You will definitely enjoy the neat château garden, beautiful baroque interiors, as well as the excellent modern Czech cuisine. The restaurant menu includes items such as home-made château pâté, fresh trout from Byšice, or excellent apple pie with nuts.

Czech Specials at a Farm, in a Wine Cellar and a Brewery

Have lunch or spend a night not only in châteaux, but also in former farmsteads. The restaurant in the partially reconstructed Bernard Farm in Královské Poříčí, between Karlovy Vary and Sokolov, is a popular destination with tourists, especially thanks to the famous, purely Czech cuisine. You can have, for example, beef broth with liver dumplings, or excellent sirloin in cream sauce. If you like fish, try the trout fillets with garlic and lovage. The farm is also a centre of traditional crafts where visitors can have a look at artisans at work and even try to make something themselves.



Another certified restaurant, situated in a newly reconstructed farmstead from the 18th century, can be found near Prague, in Dušníky nad Vltavou. Statek 1738 offers a beautiful setting in nature and, naturally, excellent Czech cuisine. You can have, for example, a piglet knee with mashed potatoes and root vegetables.



City centres also offer interesting places for your gastronomic adventures. Liberec in North Bohemia has a lot to offer. The historical spaces of the Liberec City Hall are where the Radniční sklípek restaurant resides since 1893. A broad selection of Czech specialities, such as the Svijany beef cheek goulash and home-made bread dumpling, can be washed down with several different beers from the Svijany Brewery. If you just want something little to go with the beer, we recommend roasted pork belly with onions.



When you get tired of strolling through the beautiful Moravian Kroměříž, visit the Černý orel Brewery restaurant, only 150 metres from the Archbishop’s Château. You can enjoy the selection of the well brewed Czech lagers and other beer specialities, as well as the Czech cuisine menu, cooked with love. The restaurant specialises in sauces made with brewing malt. The beer spa and the unique Kroměříž chocolate factory are also worth a visit.
