Hostýn - Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Hostýn - Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Experience the unique atmosphere of a pilgrimage to Svatý Hostýn

A magnificent pilgrimage church perched high on a hill in the heart of the Hostýnské Highlands is the most visited pilgrimage site in the Czech Republic. Every year thousands of people flock here, both tourists and followers of the Great Moravian Pilgrimage Trail. You will find not only humble accommodation for pilgrims but also beautiful Stations of the Cross, an observation tower, and even a wind-power station.

The pilgrimage tradition arose from a legend that describes a miracle associated with the Virgin Mary. The legend says that in the 13th century people were hiding here during a major Tartar incursion. There was a lack of water, and they prayed to the Mother of God for help. It is said that a spring gushed forth from the ground and a powerful storm forced the Tatars to retreat.

A spiritual centre in the midst of beautiful nature

The basilica immediately captivates you with its twin towers and dome, which have become an integral part of the landscape. On your visit, in addition to the impressive interiors don’t overlook the western facade, which is covered by a mosaic of the Hostýn Madonna composed of 260,000 special tiles imported from Italy. From the basilica you can follow the Stations of the Cross, created by the architect Dušan Jurkovič. At the thirteenth stops you will find thirteen lovely chapels built in a charming Art Nouveau style influenced by the folk architecture of Moravian Wallachia. You can see more of his distinctive buildings in the largest Moravian spa of Luhačovice or at Pustevny in the Beskids, for example.
