Advent in Czech Cities

Advent in Czech Cities

Advent is a time when we look forward to Christmas and the winter holidays. Here are some tips on where to experience the magical holiday atmosphere in the Czech Republic.

Advent in Czech Cities
Czech cities pay a lot of attention to the preparations for Advent and Christmas. Many squares are decorated with a Christmas tree, hosting markets and various cultural programmes. If you are visiting the Czech Republic this year, here are some tips. Whether going to Brno, Olomouc, Český Krumlov or Plzeň, you can enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in the most beautiful form.

Christmas in Brno

The Moravian capital of Brno traditionally looks forward to Christmas, which is a quiet and peaceful holiday there. The streets in the city centre are transformed with all the decorations during Advent. This year Christmas markets will be held in four locations: at Náměstí Svobody and nearby Dominican Square (29/11/2019–5/1/2020) as well as at the Vegetable Market and Moravian Square. Náměstí Svobody, which is a natural centre of Brno, is famous for its social atmosphere with live music, parties, zones where alcohol is served, and a winter bar. Dominican Square is a pedestrian zone with the romantic background of the New City Hall and St. Michael’s Church. Its atmosphere is great for meeting with close friends, gourmet experiences, and it is especially good for families with children. A cosy market focusing on handicrafts and traditional products can be found at Brno’s Vegetable Market, whilst a large heated marquee, a scenic Ferris wheel, and an outdoor skating rink will be present at Moravian Square.

A Christmas in Brno inherently means stalls with food and Christmas gifts, original Brno mugs and returnable packaging, a Christmas tree that commemorates the very first Christmas tree in our country, concerts, a large carved nativity scene, Advent strolls and rides, and the view of the beautifully lit tower of Old Town Hall.

Olomouc invites with the scent of mulled wine

Historical Olomouc in Central Moravia has prepared a popular specialty that people come for from all over the country. The Olomouc Christmas markets, namely the one at Horní náměstí, offer many types of mulled wine and punches with various spices, sweet or bitter, improved with rum, kirsch or fresh oranges. The Christmas markets include a rich music programme, performances for adults and children alike, period attractions, a carved nativity scene, and an outdoor ice rink. Moreover, the Holy Trinity Column, registered on the UNESCO list, will be beautifully lit in the evenings. The market opens its doors on 22 November and will end on 24 December. Every year, part of the Lower Square in the historic centre of Olomouc transforms into a public skating rink. Come ice skating, it’s free!

Český Krumlov markets in the shadow of the castle

Český Krumlov is a small town in South Bohemia, in the foothills of Šumava, at the centre of which is a large nobleman’s residence, looming above the Vltava River, registered in the UNESCO cultural heritage list. During summer, the town is full of tourists, but time slows down in winter and both tourists and locals can enjoy a peaceful Christmas market. You can buy traditional products and Christmas cookies at náměstí Svornosti from 29 November to 6 January. There will be Advent and Christmas concerts for adults and children alike. The Christmas atmosphere is then crowned with a living nativity scene – a Biblical story told through songs and dance with music. Would you like to get an original Christmas card? Have a photo taken at Museum Fotoateliér Seidel! You can strike a pose in front of a snowy period background on a sledge or skis. Reservations in advance are required.

Plzeň Advent market

In the centre of the North-Bohemian city of Plzeň, at the Republic Square beside St. Bartholomeus Cathedral, there is a traditional from 23 November to 23 December. The market will have dozens of stands with handcrafted products and craft demonstrations, as well as refreshments and tasty regional specialties. When you come after dark, you will see the unique atmosphere created by the holiday lighting of the entire square. You can combine the visit of the Advent market with a tour of the world-famous Plzeň brewery, or a tour of the First Republic Interiors by world-famous architect Adolf Loos. During Advent weekends, there are also special guided Advent tours in the city centre that take you through the history of Christmas and Christmas customs and traditions.

Christmas Market in České Budějovice

Every day you can enjoy the Christmas atmosphere, listen to carols, taste endless delicacies, and buy unique gifts.
