State Opera: a glorious past and present

A leading European opera house located in a magical neo-Renaissance building with a richly decorated interior. The State Opera is part of the National Theatre, and is the scene of opera and ballet performances.

Its rich history began in 1888, when the building was opened as a German stage with Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. Such greats as Gustav Mahler and Richard Strauss left their marks here. Opera and ballet lovers will delight in the classical repertoire with offerings such as Aida, Nabucco, Madame Butterfly and Rusalka, and they also will appreciate the spacious auditorium and Neo-Rococo decoration.
