Whether covered with snow or not, Olomouc, intertwined with landmarks, has an amazing charm in winter. Its beautiful architecture, monumental buildings, picturesque squares and alleyways will capture your attention and won’t let it go. Moreover, this Moravian gem is full of galleries, museums and exhibition halls where you can warm up both your body and soul.

At the Astronomical Clock with a Cup of Punch

Olomouc is at its most beautiful during Advent. The historical centre, which is also an urban reservation, transforms into a dreamy place full of sparkle and amazing scents. The local Christmas market with the widest offer of punch is something to remember. The Upper Square with the Baroque Holy Trinity Column, inscribed by UNESCO, will impress you not only during Christmas. The tower of the Gothic-Renaissance town hall with an astronomical clock offers a breath-taking view of the square and the city centre.

The Place Where History Was Written

There are countless exceptional buildings that you shouldn’t miss when strolling through Olomouc. One such place is the Přemyslid Castle – one of the most important castle compounds in Czechia. Not only does it have murals that are one of the best preserved examples of Late Gothic and Early Renaissance art in Moravia, but you will also find St. Wenceslas Cathedral with the second highest church tower in Czechia with the second biggest bell in Czechia, as well as Zdík Palacethe only preserved Romanesque palace in Central Europe!

A Coffee with Klimt

And where to have a cup of coffee in Olomouc to warm up? How about a villa decorated by artist Gustav Klimt who also used to stay there frequently? We are talking about the Art Nouveau Vila Primavesi in the city centre. Do you know Klimt’s painting called Mäda Primavesi? It depicts none other than the nine-year-old daughter of the owners of this amazing building.

Miracles and Giraffes

The centre of Olomouc is not the only place where history was written. When on the way to the city, you will see a hill with a beautiful building at the top. It is Svatý Kopeček with the Basilica of the Visitation of Virgin Mary – a destination for those who admire the Baroque style, as well as pilgrims; it is the very heart of the parish. You might find it surprising that Olomouc Zoo is right next to this mystical place. Together with the pilgrimage site, they form a beautiful nature nook in the city that you will love in any season, including winter.
