A World Architectural Gem
Only a few steps from the Powder Tower
near the Municipal House
, on the corner of Celetná, there is a house with the name U Černé Matky Boží
. The house designed by the famous Czech architect Josef Gočár
is not only the peak of Czech Cubist
architecture, but also a world architectural gem. Cubism in architecture is a purely Czech specialty and even in the Czech Republic it can only be found in several places. On the first floor of this extraordinary house, there is an extraordinary café. Grand Café Orient is the only Cubist café in the world
and according to the German magazine Focus, it is one of the seven most beautiful cafés in Europe.
Cubism All Around
When you look at the house from the street, you will notice the small terrace that lines the façade of the house. That is where Grand Café Orient is located on the first floor. The walk through the Cubist entrance and climbing up the stairs to the café will take your breath away. There is Cubism all around. While drinking coffee and enjoying a treat, you can admire the Cubist chandeliers, lanterns, benches, and even spoons. If you visit Grand Café Orient in the summer, you can also sit on the narrow terrace with breath-taking views of the surroundings. Grand Cafe Orient offers a unique atmosphere, beauty and elegance.
