The breath-taking Hukvaldy Castle

The world-famous composer Leoš Janáček was born in Hukvaldy in the Moravian-Silesian region. He is the author of the famous opera Her Stepdaughter, which premiered in 1904. This masterpiece fascinates music lovers around the world to this day. Information on Janáček and his life’s work can be found in the local museum.

Above the town of Hukvaldy is a 150-metre-high hill, upon which stands the largest castle ruins in the Moravian region. The first mention of this building comes from the 13th century. The best-preserved building is St Andrew’s Chapel (kaple sv. Ondřeje), built at the end of the 17th century. The chapel was the only building in the castle that was restored and maintained in the last century. Every year, the grounds of Hukvaldy Castle with the adjoining game reserve become the venue for the Janáček's Hukvaldy International Music Festival. The castle is open to the public from April to October. The castle game reserve, where you can see fallow deer and mouflon, is open year-round. Climb up the castle tower, where you will enjoy a beautiful view of the ridges of the Beskid Mountains and the town of Kopřivnice.

Silesian Ostrava Castle

Valuable historical monuments can be seen even in the industrial city of Ostrava. Visit Silesian Ostrava Castle, which stands on a small hill above the confluence of the Ostravice and Lučina in the southern part of Silesian Ostrava. The castle was built by a Těšín prince from the Piastovec family as a borderland fortress against the Czech state in the second half of the 13th century. It was converted during the Renaissance and the entrance gate with a tower dating back to the 16th century has been preserved until this very day. The complex recently underwent extensive renovation and is regularly brought to life by a range of cultural events. The castle cellars are home to an aquarium with freshwater fish, a museum of witches and torture exhibition. You can look out over the centre of Ostrava from the lookout tower on the top floor. Children will especially appreciate a scary night in the castle.
