Grabštejn Castle

Grabštejn Castle

Views of Trojmezí

The Grabštejn Castle rises high on a rocky hill near the town of Hrádek nad Nisou in the Liberec Region, in the north of the Czech Republic. In the past, the castle used to guard the road to Bohemia, and it was also a point where the borders of three countries met, and still meet today – the Czech Republic, Germany, and Poland.

The round tower is a dominant feature of the castle and it offers distant views of the whole area of Trojmezí. Another gem along the tour is the Renaissance Chapel of St. Barbara with rich decorations from the Late Renaissance period, which is completely unique in Bohemia. Visitors can enjoy it at its full beauty after the recent reconstruction. The basic tour of the castle takes visitors through the rooms of the noble owners and their servants and officers managing the property against the “flow of time”, from the mid-16th century to the beginning of the 20th century. If you want to discover the most valuable things that Grabštejn keeps inside its walls, visit the Grabštejn basement, where you can also see an archaeological exposition.

The castle was first mentioned in a document from 1286. The castle with military importance was seized by the famous warrior, Albrecht of Valdštejn, during the Thirty Years’ War. After he died, the castle was occupied by the Swedish troops and partially destroyed. During the 16th century, the Gothic castle was transformed into a representative Renaissance residence. The estate with the castle flourished when it was owned by the family of Clam-Gallas. After the confiscation in 1945, the castle continued to dilapidate until it was acquired by the National Heritage Institute in 1990, who has been gradually reconstructing it.
