The Jewish Cemetery in Polná

The Jewish Cemetery in Polná

Visit a valuable maintained cemetery with a number of Baroque and Classicist tombstones.

The Jewish cemetery in Polná is located at a spot where Jewish families lived prior to the creation of the town ghetto. It boasts a great number of historic tombstones and a rich history.
The Jewish cemetery in Polná was founded at the start of the 16th century, meaning it significantly predates the ghetto. It lies on a glorious spot above the Ochozský stream. The original stone wall has been extended and renovated several times, most recently in the 1990s. You can wander and contemplate among the cemetery’s 1,300 Baroque, Classicist and modern tombstones standing in 32 irregular rows. The oldest headstones are to be found in the northern part of the cemetery, which since 1988 has been maintained by volunteers from the Association for the Protection of Jewish Historical Landmarks in Polná.
