Old Town

Go to Prague and not recognize Old Town? That’s simply impossible! The historic center on the right bank of the Vltava River is full of important monuments, and you will find here great restaurants, luxury shops and designer hotels.

Prague’s Old Town and Royal Route

You will recognize the most famous places of Old Town while walking along the Royal Route. This tourist trail of the historic center, which was once used by processions of Czech kings and queens on their way to coronation in St. Vítus Cathedral at Prague Castle, starts at Republic Square at Municipal House. Enter Old Town at Prašná brána, walk along Celetná Street around the Cubist house At the Black Madonna and come to Old Town Square, where the timeless astronomical clock on Old Town Hall has been measuring time for six hundred years. From here continue along the Royal Route through Malé Square and Charles Street around the area of Klementina until you reach the Knights of the Cross Square with Old Town Bridge Tower and cross the Vltava River over Charles Bridge and head towards Lesser Town.

What was left out?

Naturally the Royal Route doesn’t take you everywhere. For example, off to the side are Střelecký Island on the Vltava, the Church of Our Lady before Týn or the nearby Ungelt, the Baroque Church of St. James, the Estates Theater with the Fruit Market, Bethlehem Square and St. Agnes Convent with an exhibition of the National Gallery. The one-time Prague ghetto, today’s miniature Josefov Quarter, also developed hand-in-hand with Old Town.
