Colourful Costumes and Dialect

The south part of the rugged highlands of the Bohemian Forest, along the western border with Germany, contains a completely unique ethnographic area in Bohemia. Various old customs have been preserved in the distinct Chodsko region.
The tradition of rich colourful costumes and the typical Chodsko dialect are famous. A great delicacy is baked during feasts and festivals - the popular Chodsko pies. There is even a typical Chodsko music with typical bagpipes or the membranophone Famfrnoch. All the traditions are celebrated at various fairs and festivals. In the centre of Chodsko - Domažlice, the Chodsko Festival takes place every year. The tradition of lace making, or bobbin lace is still strong in the region. People have been making the traditional Chodsko red and brown pottery in Koloveč in the Domažlice region since the end of the 18th century.

The folk traditions are presented in numerous museums all over the region. There is the Museum of Technology and Crafts in Koloveč, various costumes in Postřekov, or the Chodsko Museum in Domažlice, which presents the entire distinct region. The Czech national dog breed comes from the region - the Bohemian Shepherd. Chodsko encourages to be explored, whether on bike, on foot, or thanks to the gastronomy.
