Czech Spas Welcome Their Visitors

Czech Spas Welcome Their Visitors

The spa season starts at the beginning of May. Welcome!

Even though spas and wellness stays are available all year round these days, a pleasant tradition still survives – the spring opening of the spa season. What is to be expected from such an event today? Many special events, including historical costume parades, spring blessings, fairs and historical markets, concerts, solemn masses, and evening light shows and fireworks. You can experience all of this and more when you visit one of the spas in the Czech Republic this spring.

Karlovy Vary

This year, the West Bohemian town of Karlovy Vary will open its 661st spa season. The festival will take place from 3 to 5 May 2019. During the weekend, you can visit a craft fair, rent Gothic costumes, take in concerts and other cultural performances, and generally participate in social events that are in the spirit of ages long past. Will you get lucky and take a selfie with the founder of the city, King Charles IV? You will at least have the opportunity to see him in the costume parade again this year! After that, you can take a stroll to the fair market or the solemn blessings of the Karlovy Vary thermal springs. And what food do you absolutely have to try? The traditional, still- warm spa wafers.

Mariánské lázně

Not far from Karlovy Vary there is another, younger spa, Mariánské lázně. How much younger? This year, they will open their 201st season. The programme will start on the afternoon of Friday 10 May 2019 at the main colonnade, and the season will officially open with a symphonic orchestra concert in the evening. The official part will continue with a mass in the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary on Saturday. The cultural programme of the opening of the 2019 Mariánské lázně season is especially rich this year. On Saturday afternoon and evening, you can listen to various original bands as well as revivals, such as a Queen cover band. The main programme will be accompanied by a three-day craft fair. All of the events centre around colonnade in Mariánské Lázně.

From 10 to 12 May 2019, the Opening of the Springs will take place in Luhačovice in eastern Moravia, not far from Zlín. Luhačovice is famous for its unique spring Vincentka, which helps with breathing and digestion difficulties. The water has a unique taste that needs some getting used to, but its effects on the body are wondrous. And how will the springs be opened? The three-day festival will start with a street fair on Friday and will end on Sunday with spring blessings and various concerts.

In 1154, Queen Judith of Bohemia founded a convent ‘ad aquas calidas’ (‘at warm waters’). Judith was an active woman of enterprise. She established a hospital in the convent, where nuns took care of the sick with help from the local hot springs. Today’s Teplice spa, in northwest Bohemia, gradually grew around the spa and is celebrating the opening of its 865th season on 24 and 25 May! Visitors can expect concerts, markets, fireworks – everything a festival requires.

Jeseník and Velké Losiny

These two spas are located in the Jeseníky Mountains in northern Moravia. They combine a stay in fresh natural air with cold mountain water treatment and various wraps. If you wold like to visit and enjoy the opening of the season, come to Jeseník on 9 to 12 May 2019. There you can enjoy entertainment for the whole family: historical steam train rides, a lot of cultural events, a fair, family competitions, and the arrival of Vincenz Priessnitz, the founder of Jeseník, the first hydropathic spa in the world. In Velké Losiny, you can enjoy a bath in sulphurous springs and let your musculoskeletal system and skin relax, or visit one of the oldest operating paper mills in Europe.

If you would like to visit the lake region in South Bohemia, you are invited to Třeboň on 25 May 2019, when the local mud baths open their spa season. The festival is traditionally very rich in cultural, spa-related, and miscellaneous events that take place all over the town. There is a fair on the square and an accompanying programme in the spa for adults and children alike.
