Cheb Castle

Cheb Castle

The occasional residence of sovereigns experienced important diplomatic negotiations and significant political events of European significance.

The last one was the plot and crafty murder of generals loyal to Albrecht von Wallenstein, the commander-in-chief of the Austrian Emperor’s troops, in 1634. Since then the castle started to decay, nobody wanted to live

Why visit

J. W. Goethe, who liked to stay in Cheb and in the neighbouring Mariánské Lázně, considered the strange castle tower from black lava stone a work of old Romans. Though he was mistaken, the tower is the oldest structure of the historic town. The Emperor Fridrich I Barbarossa built the Romanesque falce type castle in the 12th century.
