Czech Republic marks 25 years in NATO
25 years ago, the Czech Republic joined NATO together with Poland and Hungary.
The instruments of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation were signed by then Czech President Václav Havel a few months earlier in the US city of Independence, where former US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright (who had Czech roots) received the documents from his hands.

An extraordinary moment for the Czech Republic and a clear signal that the country was moving towards freedom and democracy of the Western world after many long years behind the Iron Curtain.

Today, the Czech Republic has a strong civil-diplomatic as well as military presence at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. And just for the record, the current Czech President, Petr Pavel, was previously the second highest ranking man in this organisation. As a general, he headed the NATO military committee in Brussels.
